I’m still not sure what exactly a restoree is or why she’s always hungry, and some things are a bit cheesy, ugly Good thing that kindle books do not show the cover to full effect.
I voluntarily spent five days on and off forcing my way through this book that was probably an equally bad idea. I was right to do so. Retoree, the book did not deliver in any of. But for the ‘s, maybe having the hero absent for the final scenes was necessary to make those distinctions clear. Her first novel, Restoree, was written restore a protest against the absurd and unrealistic portrayals of women in s-f novels in the 50s and early 60s.
It has been several years since I last read it and from what I remember, I really liked it. Just not as much as many of McCaffrey’s other books, so don’t start here. And the plot is rollicking, even if mcczffrey do have to do a helluva lot of suspending disbelief The majority of the book deals with the Regent, a man named Harlan, and Sara trying to escape and right the plot that put Harlan into a drugged stupor under Sara’s care.

This is one of her older books, one I’d never even heard of, and I found it at a used book store that’s going out of business. And nobody else in this society has ever before thought, “Geesh, maybe being captured and chopped apart by man-eating aliens Would be sorta traumatic –? So I split the difference. I haven’t read a lof of sci fi and certainly not from the 60’s but I thought this had held up well in that aspect.
